What Time and Proper Training Will Do

3 06 2010

It’s amazing how much you can learn from a dog.  Almost every dog that comes in you learn something new.  The latest one is Lucky.  Lucky was dropped off for the board and train program.  I knew that he was going to take a little longer than the average dog.  He was extremely nervous and pretty much fearful of his own shadow.  He looked like a deer in headlights all the time.  His reaction was to always run away when he was scared.  The problem was he was on a leash.  So he would try to run but hit the end of the line then begin to freak out, crying, and biting the leash.

The first few days he didn’t have much obedience work it was mostly behavioral.  I needed him to just relax.  It seemed so simple in my eyes but in his it was the end of the world.  It has taken about a week now and he is already a different dog.  He still has a long way to go but I’m extremely happy with his progress.  His obedience is finally starting to come along.  At times you can see how proud he is of himself as he sits on a place board with a big smile on his face!  When he has his moments of freaking out on the leash I take that as me pushing him too hard too fast.

I thought that I had patience when it came to working with the dogs.  Lucky has opened my eyes even more.  There is no such thing as “taking too long” when it comes to dogs.  Each dog is different and unique.  I’m so glad that Lucky found his way to K9 Basics Dog Training.  He has made a forever place in my heart!
